Musical performance came early for The Whippersnappers,
Emmy, Casey & Avery McGuirt. Each of them began violin lessons when they
were in preschool. Today at 12, 13 & 15 years old, classical violin study
continues, but each has also branched in other musical directions. Avery
studies bluegrass fiddle, his sisters Casey and Emmy, mandolin, upright bass,
and flute. The girls love to sing tight
sister harmony and they enjoy working out their own vocal arrangements to songs
the band chooses to learn. Fifteen-year-old
Avery was the recipient of Charlotte’s Community School of the Arts Andrew Bradford
scholarship for music study in 2006-2007 and again for 2008-2009. He won the
Charlotte Folk Society’s Marilyn Meacham Price scholarship to attend Fiddle
Week at the Swannanoa Gathering in the summer of 2006. He was
recently inducted into Tri-M, the high school honor organization for
musicians. All three kids have
also competed and brought home ribbons from well-known regional fiddler’s
festivals. Accompanied by their dad David on guitar and vocals, The
Whippersnappers are winning fans throughout the region as they perform
bluegrass, gospel and folk music on festival stages, in churches and at special
events.
